In the last month or so Dad and I had many heart to heart talks. We laughed and cried together. Thankfully more laughing than anything else. He has always had a way of making me smile even when I felt more like crying. One afternoon he must have noticed something in the look on my face prompting him to tilt his head, narrow his eyes, and quite decidedly ask "What?!" as he so often did. Unable to squirm my way out of answering him he said "knock it off, and just spill it.".. His tone let me know he wasn't going to let me side step it. I had been reluctant to discuss his dying with him-- but he encouraged me to. It was our relationship to talk to each other about most things and at this time would not let me be any different with him. So as my eyes welled up I reluctantly asked him... "Daddy are you scared?" with a slow smirk creeping across his lips and a hint of that smile in his eyes He asked "of what living longer or dying?" "What do you think?" I quipped with a hint of a tear and a smile...even as he thought about the answer the smile spread wider on his face and his eyes danced with mischief -- he responded "Mark Twain has been quoted as saying "I don't like to commit myself to either Heaven or Hell, as I have friends in both places"... then he started laughing, eyes twinkled, tears abated. We had a great time laughing together talking about who he might meet where.--- I would be remiss if I dared shared that information with you. After all somethings are better left to discover on our own. :-)
